Local riding scene
Seems like the forum has been a little dead lately.
Also seems like the local riding scene has been a little lame lately.. (at least around Statesboro.)
Sorry I missed the ride on the 27th, had to be out of town. Only got 4 people to come out?
Something needs to be done to get the local scene a little more active.

we all know that sport bikers tend to travel in cliques... hardly ever get a group together like cruisers... no matter how much time and energy goes into promoting rides and/or events, people rarely show up for one reason or another... For almost a year, Jeff and I met up in Statesboro every Sunday and rode out to BFE for a while... the largest turnout I saw was around 8 or so... that was with Flyers everywhere and posted on social networking sites and such...
i also meet a lot of guys that I invite out to bike nights or to the forum, and they say something like "i bought my bike to meet chicks, not to ride that far or that fast or whatever..."
if y'all have ideas that may or may not have already been tried, feel free to start a new thread and we will post up... I'm down for getting the ball rolling, but I'm not twisting someone's arm to ask them to ride their bike - after all, why spend $$$ on a garage decoration or a chick magnet?

actually i met a guy yesterday that said he would be down to ride this sunday afternoon if you guys want to meet up and ride.
it's true that it's hard to find people that are serious about getting organized but there are some members of this site that have been repeat riders for a while. we all have issues with timing and things that have to get done in priority before joy riding.
i think that the biggest issue is that a lot of people don't realize why they want a motorcycle in the first place. most for the wrong reasons, or for reasons that have little to do with being an active motorcyclist.
as for the boro scene being slow, that's what we get for being a university town. the turnaround for riders is so high, and most of them are too young and in over their heads with school/women/partying.
i've been putting off getting more business cards made but i guess i need to get off my ass and get it done. since i'm in savannah almost daily now there's no reason i can't get them out and about.
as for the forums being dead, well there's only one way to fix that, and you all know what it is. post up! whatever's on your mind, opinions, stories, whatever can add to the community. doesn't have to be motorcycle related at all. after all, we all already have a common interest.

it will be interesting to see if he shows up... i meet people that say that all of the time.
Off subject: Why do we live in a society where it's better to lie to people than "possibly" hurt others by telling them the truth? This happens everyday in all aspects of living...
* Sales = I'm interested in the product, so I'll call you tomorrow --- never call!
* Customer Service = Your bill is correct, but we can issue a 1 time credit on next month's bill ---- never comes, or not before calling again!
* Events/Activities = Oh cool, you guys ride most Sundays... I'll plan to be there next Sunday --- never shows!
Moral of the story = If you aren't interested in what folks are saying, doing and/or selling, TELL THEM... that way they can take you off the list or just leave an "open" invitation of sorts. Sorry about the rant, but this has become a HUGE pet-peeve of mine.

You're right Nic, it's always one reason or another. And I am guilty of it too, with my job I end up working alot of weekends, (ie riding days, etc).
I know you and Jeff have done more to promote riding around here than anybody and my hats off to both of you.
I don't really have a solution, was just posting/venting out of frustration i guess.

That is really the advertising point of this forum though... we aren't a Motorcycle Club (M/C), so there are very limited rules... we are just a group of folks with at least one similar interest - motorcycles. Rides are always open to all, but none are mandatory... we would just like to get greater participation. On that note, donations are not required, nor do they change your status on Shifted... they just help keep Shifted alive and strong.
Make it when you can and would like to ride, don't if anything else... but the option is always there.

we would like more participation, but south georgia will never be south florida... being born and raised here, I'm surprised this forum has the participation and the good group of folks it has...
i always say quality over quantity - any day!

Actually you may have hit on an interesting idea here. Do you think a Riding Club of sorts could help the situation?
I'm not talking about some hardcore M/C with dues and a bunch of rules and initiations but something that might take the Shifted "community concept" to another level. Something that would have a little more organization and foster a greater commitment and sense of involvement in a group.
There could be a Statesboro chapter, Savannah chapter, Jacksonville, whatever.
It's just an idea. Anybody interested in this concept?

i know what you mean, but we already have plenty of MC's around for those that want constant commitment. things like that just seem to create hard feelings from the start and i feel we shouldn't have any requirements to ride aside from not being a fruit loop or a complete idiot. those of us that really want to organize will do so and those that can't make it can always come next time without fear of feeling not in the group.
it wasn't my original idea that shifted would 'never be a MC', that's the owners' ideology. much the same as georgia sportbike isn't a MC but there's always the regular guys going to ride in the mountains or do trackdays together. it's all what the forum members make of it.

I love to ride but my only free days of riding are in the morning and early afternoons on friday or saturday. I don't ride on sundays because I keep that day for the family. My wife works thursday thru Friday nights. Thats why I don't ride the week nights. I am always up for riding on friday mornings till about 3:30pm. If anyone ever wants to ride just hit me up. You can find me on facebook or email me thruogh the site. I do wish I could make it more events with the group but of course responsibility has to come first.

Fair enough.
I will say though that in the scenario i was thinking of Shifted would not "become" a riding club. Shifted would remain the same. The Riding club would just be something that the more "motivated" riders might want to organize. Also I don't see any rides being mandatory. Everybody has diff schedules and commitments that sometimes come before riding.

well the more i think about it, the more i like the idea....it's kinda like a no-dinner dinner party thing. this was my original plan when i passed out flyers that said statesboro group ride, time and place, and contact info (before shifted or the savannah meetup site....actually the myspace and facebook page may still be up but i doubt it).
it just didn't really work out. well maybe a few guys showed up, somebody refresh my memory if anybody here showed up with one of those cards? they were 1/4 of a 8.5x11 piece of photo paper and looked a lot like my car meet flyers.
i guess what i'm saying is that given the lack of riders we have, the area we are in, and the short period of time nic and myself have been working on this, we're doing good for what we have now. things will improve.....
and maybe somebody else will start leading another ride on another day of the week
i'm lovin' the telephone thing. seems like we have new smiley's every time i look O.o

Even if we could only get 4 or 5 to start, we could begin to show up at bike nights and other places as a group to spread the word and recruit members to the club and to the Shifted forums.

You all have great ideas, your right on something needs to change, but at the same time not everyone is free every weekend to ride, shiftedjax.com has been slow too, but then again it's summer time people have families and beach and what not. I will get with Jeff and nic and get the all day shifted ride planned out!
If anyone wants to personally contact me feel free call or text anytime 2394659166

I haven't been around much lately either. Mostly from work/family stuff. Sundays are tough for me with the big traditional Sunday family lunches and other stuff going on that day. If I get to ride at at all it's usually late in the day like 4-5pm. Sometimes Sat afternoons work out but usually tough to plan too far out--just has to kinda "happen" if the planets all line up and I look around and realize I actually have a couple of hours to myself. Which is why I hate to say "yeah ill ride" and then end up not being able to.
Also, I think more "active" scenes also usually center around crowds that likely get into a little more trouble than the "responsible" folks we have on this forum. Street racing, stunting, happy-hour/bar stuff probably draw out more people but it also contributes to other elements that may not be healthy long-term so it's a trade-off. Become known for crazy rides, top speed runs and other stuff that push the edge of safety and human life and I bet you will get more people, and more EMT's on the scene but that's just what a lot of sport bikers go for I think. Which is why they tend to be clique-ish--when you are up to certain things you have to be able to trust the people with you to keep it contained to some degree.
I think there is a place for responsible, fun riding with a few antics thrown in here and there it just takes time for other people also looking for that to trickle through the net and find it.
We can all do more to contribute knowledge via the forum though which I have also been lazy about doing.

well said travis, well said. like our ride today, there wasn't anything excessive or worthy of jail time going on. everybody seemed pretty respectful of each other and everybody rode at their own comfort level. ok, maybe i got a little deep in some turns but that's just me
