surely some of you know about how legendary the R7 is.....one on the WERA forums is going for only $20,000. a claimed 162 hp in race trim and just above the 162 KG minimum weight requirement

had the privilege of seeing two last year on hutchinson island for the concours'd'elegance.

here's a vid from some guy chasing down a so called 'very fast' porsche at the 'ring.....but the most ironic thing is seeing what other cars and bikes are on the 'ring!

Might be a very rare and iconic bike, but there is a reason they hardly took off. Google Yamaha R7 crankshaft failure, or crankshaft recall.

yeah, to quote the R1 forum:

Think they will...... Even in Superstock trim they could be mid pack in superbike races with a decent rider on them....

Seems Triplex has given up.... shame he is so blinkered. Most bikes have teething problems early in their development. The R7 was awful and it was only when Yamaha Used my billet cranks in Hagas bikes that they good reliable results. - morepower, Hinckley,England.

thing is i can't find much on google about what exactly the failure is. i know in 4g63 mitsubishi motors crank walk is a common issue so i'm assuming this was the problem here? i can't imagine the crankshaft is SO imbalanced that it causes major issues but then again that could simply be the case.

what do you know about it michael?

I don't think it was imbalance either, and the info on it is really spread out. I heard that all 500 bikes had faulty crankshafts, and a new, improved crankshaft was offered by Yamaha free of charge.

"I rode the bike on the street for about 6 months and put 550 miles on it before the dreaded R7 crankshaft failure reared its ugly head. I stopped riding the bike 11/99 after it became known that all 500 of the street R7's sold for public use were made with faulty crankshafts. Yamaha USA then decided to warranty the problem even though technically the bike had no warranty. "

so, it seems that Yamaha made it right?!? I'd take one tomorrow! All things have problems if we look hard enough... after all, it's not that you made a mistake, it's how you correct it... even in the big 4, though they don't make many mistakes.

all things have problems? the 600R has no problems from the factory! ok just kidding.....the transmission is the weak link, but that's usually rider error, and nothing that a factory pro shift kit can't fix!
